Skywalker Saga
Rise of the Sith Trilogy
Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
Movie opens with the following
crawl:
WAR! For four years the Republic and Separatist
forces have spread chaos and ruin throughout the galaxy. Led by the dreaded General Grievous, the CIS
has managed to even penetrate deep into the Republic’s heart. Unless the Republic and Jedi forces do
something soon, all hope of victory will be lost.
Meanwhile, the Jedi have
continued in their investigations into the mysterious Darth Sidious. IN the end, they have discovered that one of
their own, Count Dooku, has betrayed them.
He is none other than the apprentice of Sidious, a villain by the name
of Darth Tyrannus. Because of his fall
to the Dark Side, Dooku has lured many younger Jedi away from their masters,
turning them to acolytes of the Sith.
And now, in a stunning move,
Grievous has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor
Palpatine, who has still managed to maintain leadership of the Galactic
Senate. As the Separatist Droid Army
attempts to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi
Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor…
The typical star field
remains. The story continues as it does
in the original movie for the entire opening sequence with one exception. Anakin shows a bit more Dark Side, and it has
put a bit of a strain on his and Obi-Wan’s friendship. Instead of them being so close, the two
should seem to be a bit more distant, as if the war and all of the issues
they’ve been facing in the first two movies have created a schism in their
relationship. Nevertheless, though you
can feel the strain, the two still work well together.
In this alternate version of the story, however, Grievous
meets Anakin a second time, and until they meet again aboard the command ship he is not shown in the movie. When he enters, it is a
dramatic entrance showing his new appearance, since he is now machine more than
organic being. His exchange with Anakin
is also much more hostile, but you learn relatively quickly that Sidious is the
only reason Anakin isn’t dead even at that moment. He
wants Anakin alive for his own purposes; whatever they might be.
Otherwise, Grievous would have made him suffer a truly painful demise.
This gives room to have Anakin
show his darker side yet again. He taunts
Grievous, mocking him and his condition and saying how he wished he had ended
his miserable existence when he had the chance.
Grievous only agrees, calling Anakin a fool and inciting
Anakin to the point of almost lashing out at him. Obi-Wan, concerned for Anakin, stops him, and
Grievous cackles and chokes as he leads them to Dooku.
The encounter with Dooku also
transpires as in the original movie except that it isn't just Dooku battling Anakin and Obi-Wan. Grievous assists, dueling with Anakin while Dooku duels with Obi-Wan. Grievous only retreats after suffering an injury. Dooku defeats Obi-Wan and is about to kill him when Anakin comes and saves his life. The two duel, as in the movie, and Anakin finally wins.
Then, at the very end, Dooku pleads for his life after he realizes
Palpatine is encouraging Anakin to kill him.
Dooku reveals who Sidious is, telling him that Sidious is Palpatine, but
Palpatine only laughs and mocks him, saying, “Why would anyone believe a
traitorous Jedi? You turned on your own
masters.”
Then he uses this moment to
incite Anakin’s wrath. He tells Dooku how
he learned that it was Dooku who tried to keep Anakin from even becoming a Jedi
because he could sense how powerful Anakin was.
He killed Master Sifo-Dyas. He
tried to kill Padme countless times.
He’s brought deaths to millions of people throughout the course of the
war. He deserves to be executed, and if
Anakin doesn’t do it then Dooku will surely use his powers to convince the weak
Senators to let him go. Then the war will
continue without end.
"Anakin. Now is not the time to be weak," Palpatine tells him. "Someone must be strong for the sake of the innocent. Someone must be strong enough to go outside of the rules and regulations to do what he KNOWS is right. Are you strong enough Anakin to stand up for what is right even when the law or your masters command you to do otherwise?"
Dooku tries one more time to
plead with Anakin, telling him that Sidious is manipulating him, but Anakin
refuses to listen any longer. With
rekindled fury fueled within him, Anakin cuts his head off. Then the rest of the scene continues as in
the movies with Grievous escaping and the ship crashing to the planet’s
surface.
We then learn that Padme is
pregnant and that Anakin has been having terrible dreams, just as he did with
his mother, that Padme is going to die.
He has to do something to stop it, especially now because a baby is involved. Padme tries to encourage him to not let his
dreams get the best of him, but he tells her that he has not been
sleeping. Weeks have gone by with very
little rest at all. He is constantly tormented
by visions of her dying, and he’s not sure he can take much more of it. That’s why he has to work even harder to stop
the war. The longer it continues, the
greater it seems that Padme is at risk.
He must do whatever it takes to protect her…to bring the war to an
end…before it is too late.
He then stands before the Jedi Council,
such as it is now that the war has devastated the Jedi ranks, which is brought
up during the meeting. Anakin, we learn,
was only recently made a Jedi Knight and only because he has proven himself
time and again that he is a powerful Jedi.
However, they cannot accept him as a Master, indicating that he has asked to be one, because they fear some of
the things they have seen in his behavior of late. "Besides," says Mace, "you are far too young to be a full-fledged master and member of this council. You need to gain more experience."
"But the council has been devastated," Anakin argues, "and I am more than ready. I have been made a general of the Republic numerous times during the war. You have often admitted that I have proven myself to be a good and wise leader. Allow me to be a master. You need me. The Jedi need me."
They then mention incidences that occurred during
the Clone Wars where Anakin allowed his anger to channel the Dark Side. They fear that if he is not careful he will
succumb to the Dark Side entirely and take many with him. How
can they make him a master? Obi-Wan agrees, thus making their
relationship even more strained.
On top of this, they fear for
Palpatine’s rise to power. He now controls
most of the Senate, it seems, and he refuses to allow the Jedi to even
interfere with political affairs. The
war has turned the hearts and minds of the people against the Jedi, for they
simply do not understand the difference between a Light Side Jedi and a Dark
Sider. Palpatine seems to have used this
to shut out the Jedi entirely - a separation of church and state - proclaiming that it is only for the best that the
Jedi remain out of Senate affairs for the time being. Now they barely even know what’s going on
with the government, yet they are still expected to continue fighting the war.
Therefore, the Council says that
they want to trust Anakin with a new responsibility. They have noticed that Palpatine is close to
Anakin, like a father, so they would like Anakin to now see if Palpatine will
allow him to sit in on meetings and hearings.
He would act as a representative of the Jedi Council, and since
Palpatine seems to trust Anakin above all others, and since Anakin just saved
Palpatine, it would be a great opportunity.
Anakin, however, sees this as spying, and he disapproves of this
appointment. Obi-Wan tries to encourage
him, but he fails utterly. Anakin storms
out, furious with the Council and not hiding it.
Obi-Wan tries to get Padme’s
help, and he visits her. He explains to
Padme his fears about Anakin’s growing anger and frustration. He is afraid Anakin will go to the Dark
Side. Padme, who has also noticed
Anakin’s slow change for the worse, agrees.
Obi-Wan thanks her, telling her that he thought that he could train
Anakin as well as Yoda, but in his pride he pushed Anakin too hard…thus pushing
him away. He really hopes that he can
mend the fences. Padme, trying to
comfort him, gives him a hug.
And Anakin walks in, though not
letting them know he has caught them in this questionable embrace. Fearing a relationship is happening between
them behind his back, Anakin goes to the only person he feels he can still
trust…Palpatine.
Palpatine then tells Anakin that
he feared as much. He noticed how Padme
and Obi-Wan would look at one another, feeding Anakin's fears.
“Perhaps the child isn’t even yours, My Friend,” he tells Anakin with feigned sympathy. “I hate to tell you this, but she could be
lying to you, hoping you are so trusting that you won’t doubt her. They both have to know what would happen if
you found out. You are the most powerful
Jedi in the galaxy, and they all know it.
That’s why everyone fears you…and wants to use you.”
Then he goes on to say that he
knows about what the Council has asked Anakin to do. He feels it is a shame, but it is only
because the Jedi have lost all power over the Senate, and that goes against
their plans. Palpatine then expresses
his concerns that Darth Sidious is actually Mace Windu. “Haven’t you noticed, My Friend? Windu is always trying to find out what I am
doing. He is always trying to get his
hands on the Senate. First there was
Valorum, and Windu was obviously manipulating him. Now he is trying to manipulate me.”
When Anakin tries to express his
disbelief in this, Palpatine hits the point home. “Why else do you think Sifo-Dyas went off to
create a Grand Army of the Republic? Why
do you think Dooku took over the task?
Windu needs this war so that there is a reason for him to claim power
over the Senate. Yes, Anakin! Mark my words! Windu was the one who gave the order to create
the army for the Republic. Windu order
Dooku to lead the Separatists. Now, will
you be his pawn as well? Will you let
him use you to control me?”
Still not entirely believing it,
Anakin sighs and says, “I’m so tired. I
need to meditate on this.”
“Of course, Anakin. Of course!
I would never ask you to do anything that would go against your
conscience…not like they do. Take some
time. Rest, my friend. And if you still feel that you need to be
Windu’s pawn, so be it! I will support
you no matter what.”
After this, Grievous is
discovered, along with the Separatist Council.
However, they are not on Utapau but on Alderaan. Obi-Wan is then sent to lead the Republic
Forces to finally weed out Grievous and the Council and bring them to
justice. He is labeled as General
Kenobi, and he joins forces with Bail Organa, who we learn has been given the
title of Defense Secretary of the Republic.
Organa has been leading the Republic the entire duration of the Clone
Wars. Now his fight has come to his own
home. This is why Leia said in her
message to Obi-Wan, “For years you served my father in the Clone Wars.” It is also why Leia said, “We have no
weapons.” It is because Alderaan fought
during the Clone Wars and was so devastated that they decided to become a
peaceful planet from that time forward.
We find out later in the story, as Organa helps Obi-Wan escape Alderaan,
that he is going to issue this decree so that his planet will never again know
war. They have simply seen too much
destruction.
Anakin’s relationship with Padme
continues to deteriorate as jealousy takes an even deeper root. She begins to oppose him politically as he
takes sides more and more with Palpatine.
He also even accuses her in private of cheating on him with Obi-Wan, which causes a
final break between them. As Anakin is
once again discussing his problems with Palpatine, and his fear of Padme’s
death, Palpatine then tells about the Tragedy of Plageuis the Wise, as in the
original movie. If Anakin really wants
to save Padme, it looks like the only way to do that is with the power of the
Dark Side. Perhaps the Dark Side is what would
give him the strength to save her and to take her away from Obi-Wan for good.
"And really, Anakin. What good is the Light Side really? It is nothing more than a label the Jedi Council puts on THEIR perspective of the Force. Are they truly good? From my perspective, it sure doesn't seem like it. Even based on everything you have told me about their actions, I see nothing good about the Jedi at all."
Anakin then reveals to Palpatine
his mother’s dying words. “You are the
son of Plageius?” says Palpatine. “That
all makes sense now. He manipulated the
midi-chlorians within Shmi…I never knew her name. I would have come for you if I had known.”
He then reveals to Anakin the
truth, that he IS Sidious. He explains
that he only accused Windu of it so that Anakin would be more receptive to the
idea that Windu is behind everything.
Sidious is not the evil or manipulative one here.
Windu is. Sidious has simply been
trying to save the Republic from total complacency, which the Jedi have caused
and which has been the cause for the war and everything. Sidious has merely been trying to strengthen
the government and pull it out of the mire that it has been in…and he has
succeeded while the Jedi continue to flounder and fail…time and time
again.
Sidious concludes, “You see? All of their subtle manipulations have done
them no good. I am the Republic’s only
hope…I am your only hope, Anakin. Let me
help you save the Republic...and Padme.” He then gives Anakin a pleading look. "I trust you completely, my friend, and I KNOW you are far more powerful than I am. If you let me help you, I can make you even MORE powerful. YOU could then take my place and lead the Republic the right way - with unlimited power and strength. Please, my friend. You don't know the power of the Dark Side of the Force. Let ME show you."
The scene suddenly switches to
Padme in her chambers with 3P0. Suddenly,
the door bursts open and armed thugs attack.
3P0 is hit by blasterfire and taken down. Padme tries to fight back, but being
pregnant, she is easily overwhelmed and taken.
Obviously not caring for her welfare, the men smash her hard on the
head. It is clear by the blood spilling
onto the floor that the wound is serious.
Before Anakin can even think
about Palpatine's revelation, an alarm sounds.
Republic soldiers have spotted armed individuals of questionable
character entering Amidala’s apartment building. They are moving in to intercept. At the same time, Anakin sense her
danger. He races out of Palpatine’s
chambers without another word as Palpatine grins wickedly in triumph.
Anakin speeds to the scene. At the same time, Obi-Wan battles Grievous for the last time. This fight sequence is similar to the original movie, but it is far more natural. Republic forces led by Organa are battling with the droid armies on every side as Obi-Wan and Grievous face off. The scenes keep switching back and forth between Obi-Wan battling Grievous and Anakin racing to Padme's rescue.
Anakin arrives just in time to find Amidala
being carried off by the thugs into a waiting airspeeder. They get away before Anakin can stop them,
but he pursues swiftly.
The scene switches back to
Palpatine, now in his office. “Alert
Master Windu of the situation with Senator Amidala. Make sure the stage is set correctly. Anakin must believe that Windu is kidnapping
Amidala to use her to control him.”
Mace Windu is then notified, and
he grabs the last of the Jedi Masters at the temple to go with him to
"save Amidala". They arrive at the scene just as
the thugs arrive with Amidala. “Here you
are, Sir,” says one of the armed thugs.
“We’ve brought her as you requested.”
Anakin arrives at that moment, overhearing this. “The ship is waiting, just as you instructed. We’ll find her a good home on Kessel. Skywalker is sure to do whatever you say now
without question.” They then laugh conspiratorily. Windu and the other masters,
stunned by this, stand stupefied and say nothing.
Anakin has heard enough. This triggers his rage. He bursts onto the scene with a
vengeance. The men try to fire back, but
Anakin cuts many of them down in moments.
Windu, realizing this is a setup, tries to talk Anakin down, but it is
too late. Palpatine comes in person,
leading a huge wave of Clone Troopers.
“Attack!” Palpatine
cries. “Kill the traitors!”
The three Jedi Masters then
retreat as they battle the huge wave of Clone Troopers, but Anakin still
obviously believes them to be traitors.
He rushes them as well, and Palpatine joins in, blasting them with his
Force Lightning. While Anakin kills off
the two others, Palpatine duels with Windu.
Windu wins in the same way he did in the original movie, causing Palpatine’s
lightning to turn back on his own face.
Palpatine lies on the ground, supposedly dying, as Windu is about to kill him, but
Anakin rushes up from behind. The same basic confrontation occurs between Windu, Palpatine and Anakin, but Anakin stops Windu, blocking his final strike. Then Palpatine draws out another lightsaber that he had hidden in his robes, and he runs Windu through.
Palpatine immediately urges Anakin that
now that they have both killed the three Jedi Council members left on
Coruscant, other Jedi will feel it and begin the attack. "We must act swiftly before the Jedi are
able to unite against us. If they unite, they will
surely overwhelm and kill us, especially now that I am weakened. Quickly! Take Padme, and let's get her to the nearest medical facility. She looks badly injured."
Anakin does as he is told, for he is reliving his nightmares. "This is...just as I have foreseen it," he mutters as he pulls Padme out of the back of the airspeeder that the men had put her in. As he does this, Palpatine orders a
medic team to take her to the nearest facility for help while they deal with
the rest of the Jedi Rebellion.
“The
only way to save her now, Anakin, is to kill the Jedi. We cannot leave any left alive. Even the young ones are already poisoned by
the lies of the Jedi. They will believe
we are in the wrong. We must attack the
temple now. Will you join me? Will you be strong enough to do what is right regardless of what THEY think?”
Anakin hesitates only a little
before bowing before Palpatine. “What is
thy bidding, my master?” he says.
Palpatine grins with sinister intent but only for a moment while Anakin isn't looking. He then adopts a worried expression. “You must unfortunately leave the name of Anakin Skywalker behind. No one must know that it is you who are killing all the remaining Jedi. They will not understand. Therefore, you are no longer Anakin Skywalker. You are now Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith. Do you accept this?"
Anakin nods absently. "I accept."
"Then rise, Lord Vader," says Palpatine, and Anakin rises. "Here. Wear this." He hands Anakin a mask similar to Darth Vader's face plate for the helmet he would later wear. "This will disguise you so that no one knows who you truly are. It is enhanced so that it will not impair your abilities."
The scene shifts to show Obi-Wan
finishing off Grievous in their final duel.
Then it switches to Anakin arriving at the Jedi Temple, just as he did in the
original movie but with Vader's face plate. Then it shows Palpatine
giving Order 66. Order 66 plays out much
as it did in the movie. However, the Jedi
aren’t stupidly gunned down. They are
shown fighting against impossible Clone numbers and eventually overcome by the
overwhelming numbers.
At the same time,
Anakin leads the assault on the temple, but he is not seen killing the
kids. After seeing them, the good that
still remains in him paralyzes him. One of the boys cries, "Please don't hurt us! Please!" Then he has a vision of Luke from Return of the Jedi. "Father please!" His voice echoes in Vader's mind. And so, he
allows the little ones to flee.
But Palpatine’s plans are not
finished. He is shown speaking with a
medical technician at his personal facility. As the technician finishes repairing the
damages to his own face, Palpatine turns to one of his aids. “Just before this occurred, I received this
message from General Kenobi.” He hands
the man a datapad.
“General Kenobi wants Amidala to
meet him on Mustafar?”
“For her protection,” says
Palpatine with an evil grin.
“But rumor was that Mustafar is
held by Separatists. It sounded like the remaining Separatist leaders are headed there now.”
“It is a lie. Mustafar is a Jedi-held world. It has a secret Jedi Temple. Kenobi just wants to protect
his…"friend.” And Palpatine purposely
says it in a way as to infer that the two are lovers. The officer nods and hurries off. “Issue an order to have the Senate meet at
once,” says Palpatine to another aid, and the scene ends.
Instead of attacked by Clone
Troopers, as in the original movie, Obi-Wan is given new intel. Bail Organa approaches. “The Separatist leaders are headed to Mustafar,
General.”
Kenobi is hesitant, however, sensing
something terrible has happened. “I…I
don’t know. Something’s wrong.”
“Ben,” Organa urges, calling him by the nickname he has given him. “We have no time. We must get to Mustafar at once. We can end this war now!”
But another transmission comes
in. It is from a Jedi from the Temple on
Coruscant. “Palpatine… he’s betrayed
us…he…His new apprentice...” There is blaster fire and
explosions in the background, but it is all cut short by a gurgle and the sound
of a lightsaber.
Anakin, hearing that the transmission is to Obi-Wan, removes his mask and approaches the camera. “Obi-Wan. Is that you?
If you can hear me…I’m coming for you. Traitor!" He is shaking with raw emotions.
"Anakin? What are you talking about? Anakin? Is that you? What has happened?" Obi-Wan's heart is seized with grief and disbelief.
"Silence! You don't have the right to speak to me. You knew all along, didn't you? You were using me, just like everyone else was. Weren't you?"
"Use you? Anakin, what are you talking about? How have I used you in any way?"
"You just wanted Padme all to yourself, didn't you? How long have you been...together? Is my child even mine? Is he yours? IS HE?!"
"Child? Anakin, I don't know what you're talking about."
"LIAR! I'm just a pawn." His fury begins to drain away, leaving him cold and empty and broken. "I'm just everyone's pawn. You lied to me, the Council lied to me, Palpatine lied to me, and...even Padme... I have no one."
His fist clenches as he slams it onto the console; his rage fully returning in a flash. "I'm coming for you. Do you understand me? I will not
rest until every last Jedi is dead! Do
you hear me! I will hunt you down and
slaughter you all like the animals you are!
Traitors! How could you? How…”
He breaks off and switches off the console.
The scene then turns to Anakin, weeping and slumping to the
floor in tears. He cannot handle the
emotional stress any longer.
Obi-Wan tries to shout back to
him, but it is too late. Concerned,
Obi-Wan is frozen for a moment in indecision.
“What is happening?”
“I don’t know,” says Bail, “but
we cannot allow this to distract us. I'm sorry, my friend. We
need to finish the war. Please,
Ben! We are light years from Coruscant. It’ll take too long to get there now
anyway. We can deal with the Separatists
and then get to Coruscant as fast as we can.”
Obi-Wan nods reluctantly, mortified by what he has just heard - what he knows Anakin has done.
The scene switches back to
Anakin. An officer approaches, and Anakin quickly dons the mask. “Lord Vader…we’ve just received word from Emperor Palpatine."
"Emperor?" says Anakin, a bit alarmed.
"Yes sir," says the officer. "He just held an emergency Senate meeting. He informed them that he was attacked by the Jedi, the true masterminds behind the Clone Wars. In order to fight back against their tyranny, effective immediately, he is dissolving the Republic and reorganizing it into the Galactic Empire. He feels it is the only way to prevent these traitors from taking over."
"One problem, though, sir. During the Senate meeting, General Kenobi's forces took advantage of the distraction. He gave orders to kidnap Senator Amidala. She is presently on a ship enroute to Mustafar. She was taken right out of the Emperor's own medical
bay. His orders are for you to go there immediately to save her.”
Hearing this, all tears disappear in a
moment. On his feet, Anakin rushes off
to grab the nearest starship.
Meanwhile, the Wookieees help
Yoda off of the planet, as in the original, but it is in a small Starfighter
that he uses to head to Coruscant himself.
As this happens, Republic forces arrive on Mustafar. Obi-Wan leads the assault. At the same time, a ship arrives bearing
Padme into the facility. A medic who is
with her tells a nearby droid officer, “She is going into labor. We need to perform surgery at once to save
the babies.”
“Babies!” says the officer.
“She is bearing twins.”
Obi-Wan and the Republic forces
are shown briefly battling with the droid armies and wiping them out, pushing
into the base where the Council is hiding.
Then the Council is arrested even as Anakin arrives, still wearing the mask. Anakin leaps out of the ship and rushes
towards the building, rushing over the bodies of clones and droids alike,
showing that the battle had lasted much longer than the brief scene
showed.
The scene shifts, showing Palpatine in his chambers on Coruscant. He is watching a terminal that shows the scene on Mustafar and Anakin’s arrival. “Initiate Order 66,” says Palpatine after hitting a switch. A clone trooper is then seen receiving this order, and when he sees Anakin approaching swiftly, he gestures to his troops to allow Anakin to pass. They then fall in behind him to lend their support.
The scene switches to Obi-Wan who has found Padme in the medic bay. Bail
Organa is also there, standing over her protectively but in full armor including helmet that conceals his identity. "She isn't going to make it," a medic droid is explaining to Bail. "There is nothing we can do. I'm sorry. She has suffered too much trauma, and it seems almost as if she has lost the will to live. All we can do now is save the babies." The droid then points to one artificial womb. "We have saved one already. The other has yet to be delivered."
"Twins?" says Obi-Wan, still in shock that these are Anakin's children. "Anakin and Padme... twins?"
"Wait," says Bail. "These are Anakin's children?" He is in just as much shock. "I had no idea she was even pregnant."
But Obi-Wan is distant. He then stands over the womb, placing his hand on the glass; his heart breaking with each passing moment as the medic droid finishes extracting the other baby. The droid places Leia in another womb near Bail.
The door opens, and there is Anakin with Vader's face plate on, glaring with fierce hostility towards Obi-Wan. Anakin, seeing Obi-Wan hovering over his son and sensing Padme's critical condition, explodes into a blind rage.
He rushes at Obi-Wan who quickly ignites his lightsaber and defends himself. He orders Bail, "Get them out of here. I'll meet you back at the ship!" Bail complies, grabbing Leia's womb as he gestures to some of his men to grab Padme's bed and Luke's womb.
That's when the Clones arrive, attacking Bail and all the other non-clones in the room. Bail escapes with Padme and the children while Obi-Wan lures Anakin away from them. A fierce firefight ensues, and the rest of the non-clones are gunned down as they try to stand against the impossible numbers of Imperial troops.
The scene cuts away. Yoda arrives at Palpatine’s
chambers. He confronts
Palpatine. Then the duel between
Palpatine and Yoda, Anakin and Obi-Wan occurs.
Meanwhile, Padme is ushered off to Organa’s ship, which is still manned
by those loyal to him from Alderaan. As
Republic vessels launch fighters to stop them, Bail escapes with Padme in his
ship’s medical center along with Luke and Leia.
They barely escape to hyperspace.
The battles between Yoda and
Palpatine, Anakin and Obi-Wan end much the same as they did in the
original except for the finale between Obi-Wan and Anakin. After cutting off both arms and legs, Obi-Wan
tries to reach down to help Anakin, but fueled by his own rage, Anakin refuses
his help. He curses Obi-Wan, accusing
him of stealing Padme away from him and even conceiving a child with her. Obi-Wan tells him it isn’t true and that he’s
been deceived. He tries again to help
Anakin, promising him that if he could he would trade places with him.
Weeping openly for Anakin, Obi-Wan says, “I
would do anything for you, my brother. I
would never have taken anything away from you.
You were my best friend, Anakin!
I love more than you could possibly imagine! You’ve been tricked! Don’t allow it to destroy you. Let me help you! Please, Anakin! It's not too late. I can save you! Please! You’re sinking to the lava. Let me help you!”
And then, clone troopers find
them and attack. Obi-Wan defends against
them for a few moments, desperately desiring to chase them off long enough to
save Anakin, but all at once his hopes are destroyed. Anakin is set on fire and burns as he
continues to shout defiantly up at Obi-Wan, obviously not believing a word he
has said. Heart-broken, Obi-Wan only
flees when Anakin loses consciousness, for he believes at that point that he
truly is dead. Several clone troopers then
hurry down to grab Anakin’s body to carry him off - just as Grievous' minions had in the previous movie.
Obi-Wan is then seen racing to
Anakin’s Starfighter. He steals it,
along with R2, who is in it, and he rushes off to escape the system. Before jumping to hyperspace, he contacts
Bail and sets up a rendezvous. Likewise,
Yoda is seen escaping in his own Starfighter from Coruscant, and he, too,
contacts Bail to set up a rendezvous. Finally, the Emperor is shown departing Coruscant.
The scene cuts. The Emperor arrives on Mustafar, bringing with him an entire staff of Sith medical droids. Anakin is then shown being transformed into Darth Vader, just as in the movie
except that he does not scream “Noooo!” at the end.
Instead, the Emperor says, “I’m sorry, my friend. I’m afraid the reports from the
Clone Troopers were that Padme died giving birth to your son. Kenobi has your son now. Also, they confirmed it. The child is yours. The only thing you can do now is help me hunt
down the Jedi…every last one…until you find Kenobi again…and the son whom the Jedi stole from you. Mark my words, Vader. The Jedi will raise your son to serve them. They will use him as they tried to use you. They will turn him against you, and they will use him to try to destroy us and OUR Empire.”
Vader, in response, says nothing. In the end, there are a few moments of
silence broken only by Vader’s mechanical breathing. Everything goes black.
Finally, aboard Bail’s ship,
Yoda and Obi-Wan meet with him. He
explains that Padme did die from a head injury, but her children were
spared. Obi-Wan explains to Yoda that
they are Anakin’s children, for he revealed to Obi-Wan in the end that Padme
was his wife. “Anakin only knows about
his son. He doesn’t know about the
girl.”
Then it is agreed that, to hide
her, Bail would take her as his own daughter.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan would take Luke to Owen Lars on Tatooine, for who
else would be better to care for Luke than Anakin’s old, best friend. Obi-Wan would then go there and live as
Luke’s protective guardian, waiting for the right time to train Luke to become
their new hope for the galaxy.
As for the rest of the Jedi,
Yoda explains that before he went and confronted Palpatine, he went to the Jedi
Temple, snuck in, and sent a transmission to all Jedi.
Go into exile and hide. The Dark
Side has won, but only for a time. There
will come a day when the Jedi will rise again.
Wait for that time.
Then the
movie ends much as the original did.
Yoda goes into seclusion on Dagobah, Obi-Wan takes Luke to Owen, Bail
takes Leia to his wife on Alderaan, and Vader and the Emperor are seen with
Tarkin viewing the skeletal beginnings of the Death Star.
And the Revenge of the Sith
comes to an end.
